Open your favorite navigation app and search for “foot spa.” You’re not looking for a typical massage therapist or spa, you’re looking for a place that focuses on reflexology.

Modern reflexology is based on an ancient form of foot and hand therapy practiced in China and Egypt as long ago as 2330 B.C. The Mayo Clinic describes the practice as “the application of pressure to areas on the feet (or the hands)” and states that several studies “indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as stress and anxiety, and enhance relaxation and sleep.”

According to Chinese medicine, different body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems. Reflexologists use maps of the pressure points in the feet, hands, and ears to determine where to apply pressure.
